What to Pack for a Moroccan Mountain Adventure
June 10, 2024
Planning a trek in the Moroccan mountains, especially in the majestic High Atlas or up to the summit of Mount Toubkal, requires smart and efficient packing to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure. Start with a reliable 40–70L backpack and good hiking boots that are waterproof and well broken-in, along with a pair of comfortable camp shoes. Dressing in layers is essential: pack moisture-wicking base layers, a warm fleece or insulated jacket, and a waterproof outer shell to protect against wind and rain. Depending on the season, especially if you’re trekking in winter or ascending to high altitudes, don’t forget a down jacket, thermal sleeping bag, gloves, a warm hat, and possibly crampons or trekking poles. Essentials like a sun hat, sunglasses with UV protection, high-SPF sunscreen, lip balm, a headlamp, reusable water bottles (at least 2 liters) are crucial. You’ll also want a basic first aid kit, snacks for energy, a power bank, personal toiletries, and eco-friendly hygiene items. In remote villages and mountain refuges, having cash in Moroccan Dirhams is important, as well as a passport copy and travel insurance with trekking coverage. At Trek Toubkal, our guides always recommend packing light but being prepared for quick weather changes and cold mountain nights. Whether you’re hiking for a day or several, this packing list will help you stay comfortable, respectful of local customs, and ready for the adventure of a lifetime in Morocco’s breathtaking mountain landscapes. And if you need to buy or rent trekking gear, we have a shop located in the center of Imlil that offers all the essential equipment and materials for your mountain adventure.
